NFL Pledges $250 Million Towards BLM? – False
A recent viral Facebook post claims that the NFL has agreed to give Black Lives Matter 250 million dollars. The post is made by a conservative Facebook group and has already gathered over 40 thousand shares. The Facebook page that posted claims they will also be boycotting the NFL from that point onwards.
However, the claim is not accurate. While the NFL has indeed pledged $250 million in a 10-year period to combat systemic racism and support social justice efforts, they have not mentioned that they will give the entirety of the amount to BLM. The monies have been pledged to various causes that align with the NFL's ideology and brand.
The NFL website mentions some of the organizations that will receive part of the funding such as the Alabama Appleseed Center for Law and Justice, Anti-Recidivism Coalition, National Urban League, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, and the United Negro College Fund. It further mentions that the NFL will be taking steps beyond just utilizing its financial resources including raising awareness and promoting education on topics such as social justice issues and reforms.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell also tweeted a video to that effect, stating that the NFL condemns racism and systemic oppression of black people. Thus, after fact-checking, we rate this post false and misleading.
