Is The National Guard Being Activated Only In Democrat Cities?
A recent Instagram post (archive) claims that National Guard troops are being activated across the country in Blue Democrat cities. The post was made on November 2, 2020, and claims that while Blue cities are being boarded up in anticipation of possible election-related violence, Red Republican cities are not doing so. Furthermore, the post claims that the National Guard is not being called in the Red cities.
However, the claims in the Instagram post are inaccurate. The National Guard is usually deployed by each State’s respective Governor and has already been deployed in 16 states, as reported by the Military Times. These also include states that are expected to vote Republican in the election such as Alabama, Tennessee, and Texas. Furthermore, these states also have Republican Governors. This debunks the claim that the National Guard is only being deployed in Blue Cities.
Fact-checking website Leadstories.com reached out to the National Guard Bureau for information and got in contact with spokesman Wayne Hall. Hall stated that the National Guard has a history of providing electoral support to state authorities. As there is a lack of volunteers due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the National Guard deployments have increased this year. The National Guard can be called on by Governors to provide various forms of cyber-security, physical security, and logistical assistance including polling station assistance following State law, as reported by the National Guard Bureau. Hence the claim that the National Guard is deployed only to deal with possible violence is false.
Therefore, the claims presented in the Instagram post are false.
