Did Trump's Sister Tweet Her Support?
A recent viral tweet claims that President Trump’s sister, Elizabeth Trump Grau, came out in support of Trump relating to the 2020 presidential election. The tweet claims that Elizabeth issued a rare public statement, stating that Trump won the 2020 election. The tweet has over 6 thousand retweets currently Trump himself thanked her for the support and shared the tweet, garnering an additional 20 thousand retweets. The source for the claim was an article by WayneDupree.com which cites a tweet from the account @TheBettyTrump. The claim was widely shared on other social media platforms as well, such as this Facebook post with over 1.6 thousand shares.
However, the original tweet is not legitimate and was made by a parody account that has since been suspended. Archived versions of the tweet can be viewed using The Wayback Machine. New York Times reporter Jack Nicas made a Twitter thread highlighting several details that pointed to the account being fake, such as it using stock images and its tweets only going back a day.
Subsequent tweets by the account admit that it was a parody account and expressed surprise that President Trump himself took notice of it.
The WayneDupree.com article was later updated to reflect this new information and apologized for the misreporting. Several other publications covered the story as well including Business Insider, Reuters, and PolitiFact. VICE News called Elizabeth Trump Grau to confirm. Grau stated that she was “annoyed at the whole thing” and that she was trying to delete it.
As the source for the claim is a self-admitted parody account, the claim is debunked.
