Did Dr. Roger Hodkinson Claim Covid-19 The Greatest Hoax?
The internet is agog with a claim that Dr Roger Hodkinson, a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons committee in Ottawa, Canada, called Covid-19 a hoax. This claim has been widely reported on Twitter, as can be seen here, here, and here, as well as other social media platforms. How true is the claim?
The Origin of the Viral Video
Sometimes in November, there was a viral video that captured a man said to be Dr. Roger Hodkinson commenting on Covid-19. In that video, the man was recorded saying "Covid-19 is the biggest hoax ever perpetrated on an unsuspected public." The man in question also stated further that there was no need for wearing masks. This video recording was made at a council meeting which was held in Edmonton, Canada.
What Happened During the Council Meeting?
In the council meeting where this viral video originated from, there were several others who, like Hodkinson, made some comments. While it was only Hodkinson's statement that drew the attention of other users, it is essential to state that other members expressed displeasure against the use of masks.
The Original Video and the Viral Video
Another thing worthy of note is that while the original video just displayed a telephone logo on a black screen, the viral video had Hodkinson's picture and title. The person who identified himself as Dr. Hodkinson in the viral video didn't just make a comment but also listed his credentials saying:
"So you don't immediately think I'm a quack, I'm going to briefly outline my credentials so that you can understand where I'm coming from in terms of knowledge base in all of this.
I'm a medical specialist in pathology which includes virology. I trained at Cambridge University in the UK. I'm the ex-president of the pathology section of the Medical Association. I was previously an assistant professor in the Faculty of Medicine doing a lot of teaching. I was the Chairman of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada examination committee in pathology in Ottawa.
But more to the point, I'm currently the Chairman of a biotechnology company in North Carolina selling a COVID-19 test, and you might say I know a little bit about all this."
At the moment, no one can say with certainty if Dr. Roger Hodkinson did call Covid-19 a hoax or not. For now efforts are being made to reach out to him for confirmation. However, in the midst of this, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada have issued a statement, and in this statement, the institution did claim that Dr. Roger Hodkinson didn't make the claim, while also setting the record straight that Dr. Hodkinson is not, and has never held the position of the chairman of the institution at any point.
